Following Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, there is one particular player who is stealing the spotlight, the man wearing the mythical number nine shirt: Hugo Ekitike.
The chatter following the midweek rout has been dominated by the young Frenchman’s sensational form. Speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, David Lynch was effusive in his praise for Ekitike, particularly following his display against his former club. The numbers speak volumes, as Lynch noted: “He has been sensational. Six goals in 12 appearances and not all of those have been starts.” That is the kind of efficiency managers dream of, especially when navigating the packed European schedule.
The 22-year-old’s performance against Frankfurt was, quite simply, a masterclass in centre-forward play. Lynch went further, declaring: “Everything about his performance last night was sheer class.” The goal itself encapsulated the confidence surging through the player. It wasn’t merely a tap-in, but a moment of calculated brilliance. “The goal is a brilliant run, a brilliant touch across the defender and then a composed finish,” Lynch detailed.
It’s not just the goals, however. What truly separates the good from the great is the all-around contribution. Ekitike’s work rate and intelligence were highlighted as a key component of his success. Lynch pointed out a statistic that should warm the heart of any manager: “He wins four out of five ground duels, drops in and taking the ball and getting Liverpool up the pitch. What more could you want from your centre-forward?” That’s the kind of complete performance that elevates a team, offering a focal point in attack and a willing participant in the build-up.
The most intriguing aspect of the current situation is the immediate debate his form creates in the squad. Liverpool also have Alexander Isak, a phenomenal striker in his own right, but football is a game of the present, and Lynch was unequivocal in his assessment of the short-term reality.
He starkly contrasted the two players: “In terms of between him and Alexander Isak, he is just playing better and looks a better player at the moment.” This is the kind of ruthless pragmatism successful teams thrive on. Slot has shown he will pick the player delivering on the pitch, and Ekitike is undeniably that man right now.
While acknowledging the quality of Isak, Lynch emphasised the immediate reality for the manager: “We don’t see training and Isak is obviously unbelievable but the fact is that Isak hasn’t been great in those past few games, so in the short-term you’ve got to with your strongest player and that’s Ekitike for me.” This is the kind of healthy competition that drives standards at the top level.
Ekitike has seized his opportunity, performing at a remarkably high level when it matters most. He is ticking every box: goals, assists, link-up play, and defensive contribution. For now, the number nine jersey sits firmly on his back, and the Premier League champions look all the stronger for it.
