Virgil van Dijk to AC Milan Talk Refuses to Go Away Despite Liverpool Stay

Virgil van Dijk stayed at Liverpool this summer, but the AC Milan noise has not disappeared. That is the reality. One decision has been made, another could still follow later.

The Dutch centre-back had looked increasingly likely to leave Anfield when his contract situation became uncertain during the season. A move to San Siro was discussed heavily, personal terms were said to be in place, and Milan clearly saw an opening. In the end, Van Dijk remained where he was, keeping the captaincy after a poor Liverpool campaign and putting an immediate stop to the exit talk.

AC Milan interest remains alive

That has not killed the story. Quite the opposite. The claim from Italy is that Milan still believe there is a route to signing Van Dijk, whether through a future fee or on a free transfer down the line. The key point here is simple, Milan’s interest was serious, and some around the club still think it can happen eventually.

One prominent voice pushing that line has been Carlo Pellegatti, who said: “Every now and then, people make fun of me for saying Van Dijk would join, but then they had done the same the January before Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived.” He doubled down further, adding: “I continue to say that Gerry Cardinale made clear: ‘Either we get him now by paying or next year for free.’ I said that Van Dijk will arrive at Milan sooner or later.”

Van Dijk legacy at Liverpool stays strong

Van Dijk is now 35, but his standing remains obvious. Liverpool paid €85m to sign him from Southampton in January 2018, and he fully justified that outlay. He transformed the defence, became one of the defining centre-backs of his era, and delivered silverware.

His record stands at 380 appearances, 36 goals and 16 assists from central defence. The honours list is substantial too, two Premier League titles, the Champions League, European Super Cup, Club World Cup, FA Cup and two EFL Cups.

Transfer question may return

For now, Van Dijk remains a Liverpool player. That is the fact that matters. Still, AC Milan have not let it go, and when a club keeps circling a player of this profile, the discussion rarely disappears for good.
