Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool future remains one of the more intriguing storylines of the summer transfer window, and David Lynch believes the coming weeks could prove decisive.
Speaking to Trev Downey on the Anfield Index podcast, Lynch discussed Elliott’s position as Liverpool weigh up their midfield options. While speculation continues over potential interest from Premier League and Bundesliga clubs, Lynch suggested the Reds have not yet reached a final decision on the 23 year old’s future.
Instead, preseason could become Elliott’s biggest opportunity yet.
“I understand it in terms of his future, the idea was and is to kind of bring him back into preseason and then start to deal with that,” Lynch explained.
That approach would allow Liverpool’s new head coach, Andoni Iraola, to assess Elliott first hand before determining whether he remains part of the club’s plans.
Trev Downey referenced Elliott’s difficult campaign, noting how a combination of misfortune and limited opportunities had affected both his performances and perceived market value.
Lynch acknowledged those struggles, but made it clear that Liverpool still regard Elliott as a player of genuine quality.
“Last season was a nightmare, but he’s a good player,” Lynch said.
Rather than suggesting Liverpool are actively looking to move him on, Lynch pointed towards continued interest from elsewhere.
“I think there will be interest in him,” he said. “I think there’ll be interest from Germany as well. I know the German clubs have been sniffing around him for a while.”
That interest reflects Elliott’s reputation despite an underwhelming campaign. His technical quality and experience at a young age continue to attract attention across Europe.
Perhaps the most significant point raised by Lynch was that Elliott’s future has not been settled.
He believes Liverpool want to see how the midfielder performs before making any firm decisions.
“There’s potentially an opening there for Liverpool to really have a look at him in a real, let’s say, look, I want to keep this guy around.”
That opportunity could become even more valuable given the physical demands expected under Iraola.
“I think it really is going to need bodies as well because I think the style of football is very intense,” Lynch said.
With a demanding schedule and an energetic tactical approach expected, squad depth could become increasingly important. Elliott therefore has an opportunity to convince the coaching staff that he deserves a significant role.

Despite the optimism surrounding preseason, Lynch also made it clear that another pathway remains open.
“That’s the decision they’re going to make,” he said. “What’s his level looking like? Is he capable of playing fifty and twenty games for us in a season, maybe not all starts, or do we need to get him out on loan?”
For Lynch, that remains the central question.
Rather than treating Elliott’s future as already decided, Liverpool appear ready to assess where he fits within Iraola’s plans before reaching a conclusion.
Lynch also addressed speculation linking Elliott with a permanent move.
“This talk of a permanent, and certainly at that fee, I think if someone came in with a permanent and it was crazy money, then yeah, absolutely maybe Liverpool would consider it because they consider it for most players at that price, but not for those sorts of sums.”
That suggests Liverpool are not actively pursuing a sale. Instead, they are keeping their options open while allowing Elliott one final opportunity to prove he belongs in the first team.
As Lynch concluded, “Big, big, big preseason coming up for him where he can force his way into the first team squad, or it may be a case then that they’ll decide after that… he needs a season long loan somewhere.”
For Elliott, the message could hardly be clearer. Liverpool’s decision has not yet been made, and the next few weeks may shape the direction of his Anfield career.
