Liverpool Transfer News: Reds to Reignite Their Interest in La Liga Forward

Most of the latest transfer news around Liverpool has become a bit repetitive, and a familiar name has surfaced once again.

World Cup winner Nico Williams is reportedly on Liverpool’s shortlist again as they continue their search to replace Mohamed Salah.

PSG forward Bradley Barcola remains the priority it seems, but a move for Williams could be on the cards.

The Athletic Bilbao forward has been tipped for a major move for a couple of years now, and he might finally get his wish.

Liverpool Interested in Williams

According to Ekrem Konur, Liverpool are once again interested in a potential move for the 24-year-old forward. However, they aren’t currently leading the race for his signature…

Speaking on X, he said: “Liverpool are interested in Nico Williams, but Arsenal’s pursuit is currently more advanced.”

“Arsenal have made new contacts for the Athletic Club winger, with sporting director Andrea Berta assessing whether a deal is feasible.”

“His contract includes a £77m release clause, a figure Arsenal and several Premier League clubs can realistically meet.”

Why do Liverpool Want Williams?

At one point Williams was one of the hottest prospects in Europe. Last summer he was on the verge of signing for Barcelona, before agreeing a shock ten year contract to keep him at the club until 2035.

But it’s important to note that the contract included a £77m release clause.

Going back to 2023/24, Williams shone for Athletic Club with 18 direct goal involvements in 31 league appearances. He then was a standout performer for Spain in their EURO 2024 triumph.

However, since then he has only managed ten goal involvements in his last two league campaigns (5 goals, 5 assists in 24/25 + 6 goals, 4 assists in 25/26).

He has never managed to score more than 11 goals across all competitions in a single season so far. So it’s arguable whether there is true value in his £77m release clause.

But the potential is clearly there. Electric pace, quick feet but not quite the end product that Liverpool need after the departure of Mohamed Salah, who still managed 12 goals and 10 assists last season.
