The problem is that United have spent years looking reactive in these moments, and fans are entitled to wonder whether the club has a clear contingency plan.

Sesko cost £74 million and, if fit, should be a central part of the next phase. If Bayern are already considering him as part of their future, United need to make sure his role at Old Trafford is strong enough that the conversation goes nowhere. That means clarity over tactics, clarity over recruitment, and clarity over who Carrick truly trusts in attack.
