Following Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final it was reported the Blues had reached an agreement with Alonso.
The 44-year-old is said to have agreed a four year contract until 2030, and Chelsea are expected to officially announce Alonso on Sunday morning.
Alonso was Chelsea’s preferred candidate, and it’s a real coup for the Blues to get him through the door given the current struggles at the club.
Chelsea have given Alonso the title of manager rather than head coach, in a move which suggests he’ll have more control than Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
However, the former Real Madrid boss has a huge task on his hands, and needs backing in the transfer window this summer.
With it looking like the Blues will be out of Europe completely next season, they could struggle to keep hold of all their best players.
Cucurella and Fernandez have both been linked with a summer exit, and Phillips has provided an update on the situation.
He took to X.com and said:
“Chelsea and Xabi Alonso have agreed a contract and length of contract.
“All parties now working to get it sealed ASAP.
“Alonso speaking to Chelsea players and wants to keep Cucurella and Fernandez.”
