FC Barcelona had a major decision to make by the end of this season. Everyone knew that Robert Lewandowski was in the final months of his existing contract with the club and, at 37, they had to decide whether to renew him.
Lewandowski has not performed at the level everyone expects of him so far this season. Age seems to be finally catching up with him, and injuries have become a regular occurrence. However, when it mattered most, as it did against Newcastle last midweek, he stepped up with a brace.
Now, the Pole’s future is starting to look less uncertain than it did a few weeks ago. Even at 37, the Barcelona striker appears increasingly likely to stay on for another season, which says a lot about both his own ambition and the club’s continued faith in what he can still offer.
Reports relayed from Poland suggest that the clearest expectation now is a one-year renewal. Tomasz Wlodarczyk, speaking about the situation, as quoted by SPORT, said:
“This decision will be made shortly. I think April will be the time when his future will be clarified and formalised. In my opinion, there will be a one-year contract extension.”
Lewandowski may no longer be a long-term solution, but he can still be a useful one, especially if the club want experience, goals and leadership while gradually reshaping the forward line.
Wlodarczyk also explained why he believes the veteran forward is leaning towards staying. He said:
“Firstly, because Robert wants it, and we assume that the other side, Joan Laporta, Deco, also wants it. Lewandowski is definitely closer to staying at Barcelona today.”
The family factor seems to matter too. Lewandowski is comfortable in Spain, and his children’s current schooling in Barcelona is playing a major role in his decision-making. That makes this feel less like a final payday decision and more like a football and lifestyle choice combined.
Lewandowski may not have much left in the tank, but even if Barcelona sign a new striker this summer, they could still keep him around. If they manage to renew him on significantly lower wages, he could provide support for the new striker while also contributing on the pitch.
It remains to be seen how things play out on this front in the coming months.
