Real Madrid’s extraordinary public confirmation of their rejected €150 million bid for Julian Alvarez last night has triggered a dogfight between three of Spain’s biggest clubs.

In that statement, Real Madrid confirmed that Atletico Madrid had thanked the club for the €150 million offer and pointed to his release clause, a claim the city rivals vehemently denied.

Much of the confusion has centred on the value of his release clause, with figures ranging from €120 million to €150 million circulating widely in the media.

Now, journalist Ruben Uria is setting the record straight, adding that Alvarez’s release clause stands at €490 million.

There are no reductions, no special conditions and no exceptions for any club, Spanish or otherwise, regardless of timing or circumstance.

The journalist uses Real Madrid’s own bid to dismantle the lower figures being reported elsewhere. If the clause were €120 million, why would Real Madrid submit an offer of €150 million and voluntarily pay €30 million above it?

Beyond the figures, Uria also sheds light on why Tuesday’s events unfolded the way they did.

The relationship between Atletico president Miguel Angel Gil Marin and Florentino Perez is described as completely nonexistent.

When Real Madrid made contact to enquire about Alvarez, Atletico shut down the conversation immediately.

Real Madrid’s subsequent public statement, Uria suggests, was primarily designed to show that Perez had delivered on his election promise to make a record offer for a top player.

With Real Madrid not expected to return with an improved offer, Barcelona’s pursuit of the forward isn’t faring any better, thanks to Atletico’s release clause.
