Journo: UEL wins have made one Utd star look more competent than he is, he ‘can’t cope in domestic games’

Manchester United slumped to a 17th Premier League defeat at the hands of West Ham yesetrday afternoon as the club rounds off one of the most dismal top-flight campaigns in their entire history.

For the fans who enjoyed year on year of seeing the Red Devils add to their trophy cabinet of league titles up to the point of a then-record making 20, what they’re now being made to witness will be entirely unfathomable.

Indeed, this United side in comparison to that of just over a decade ago is worlds apart, and what’s more concerning, you’d struggle to see how they reach the status of title-chasers within the coming years.

Ruben Amorim has his work cut out – and that’s an understatement

A truly lacklustre display in front of 70,000+ of the Old Trafford faithful on Sunday culminated with Graham Potter’s Hammers becoming the sixth side to complete a league double over United, joining Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers on the list of clubs to have achieved the feat in 2024/2025.

Numerous players’ performances left much to be desired throughout the 90 minutes. However, one Red in particular came under fire for a concerningly lacklustre display in the hour he played: Manuel Ugarte.

Ugarte fails to impress in shoddy Irons showing

The Uruguayan was simply no match for his Irons’ counterparts before he was hooked in the 59th minute. Ugarte earned a measly Sofascore rating of 6.4 after winning only one ground duel, one aerial duel and making one foul. He also lost possession six times and committed one error leading to an opponent’s shot.

After he was dispossessed by former Red Aaron Wan-Bissaka, journalist Samuel Luckhurst took to X/Twitter to suggest United’s Europa League triumphs have led to Ugarte looking more competent than he actually is; his flaws have been exposed frequently when he’s up against Premier League outfits.

“Wan-Bissaka robbing Ugarte of the ball there is the difference between Premier League and Europa League in a microcosm for MUFC. Ugarte can cope in Europe but often can’t cope in domestic games,” he said.
