Jovan Mijatović has a new loan deal as NYCFC sends him to Germany

Jovan Mijatović was supposed to be the striker for New York City FC. When the Serbian signed with the Queens side back in 2024, there was genuine excitement. He was turning into a young star with potential in Serbia, and there was the expectation that he would be the one who could be relied on up front and center. Sadly, that was not the case, and now the forward is on a loan journey that is haunting the Pigeons.

After a tough 2024, NYCFC initially loaned Mijatović to Oud-Heverlee Leuven last January. Despite early struggles, the loan was renewed over the summer, and the hope was that the striker would find his form. That did not happen, for he continued to struggle in the attack. Eventually, his playing time declined.

For the most part, he has come off the bench or has not played in matches over the last few months. It was thought that he would stay with the team and try to turn things around.

NYCFC's Jovan Mijatović continues to struggle

In the end, NYCFC and OH Leuven agreed to terminate his loan, allowing Mijatović to try and revitalize his career, again. As such, the Serbian has now joined Braunschweiger Turn- und Sportverein Eintracht von 1895 e.V., or Eintracht Braunschweig, in the 2. Bundesliga in Germany. The new club is doing a little better compared to the Belgian side, but sits in 12th place out of 18 teams.

The new loan will last until July 13, 2026, with an option to extend until January 20, 2027. There is also an option to buy. Whether Mijatović can be successful in his new home is yet to be seen. However, NYCFC would benefit greatly for him to do well and eventually make the move permanent or even have him transfer elsewhere.

But it has not been an easy road, and Germany will likely be full of challenges. The Serbian has not played well since his move to the Big Apple, and ultimately, his signing is viewed as a failure.

Mijatović did not play well with the Boys in Blue, and it might be possible that Nick Cushing was not able to coach him properly, where the striker could try to shine. At the same time, maybe leaving Serbia and Red Star Belgrade when he did was too quick a move. Perhaps it would have been better for him to stay another year.

It must also be said that Mijatović just could not fit in at NYCFC and OH Leuven. Sometimes, a player just runs into bad luck. That does not lessen the blow that he was not successful and is now on his second loan.

The Serbian should have taken NYCFC by storm. Instead, Mijatović is turning into one of the worst contracts in club history. It is a shame, for he has the talent to be a star. Maybe his new club will be the perfect move for the striker, and that the Boys in Blue will not completely lose out on his contract.
