American striker Jozy Altidore admitted Liga MX remains superior to Major League Soccer, just weeks into his loan spell with Puebla.
Altidore joined the Mexican team in July, amid the 2022 Apertura, from Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution to cover for an injured Fernando Aristeguieta. Only weeks into his stint with Puebla, the forward already confirmed the league’s superiority over its United States counterpart.
"Here it is a more technical league, many players with great quality, players from World Cup teams like in MLS too, but here tactically, soccer-wise it is a little better, a little stronger and in MLS it is more physical," he said in an interview with TUDN.
The player’s conclusions come after spending 10 years playing in Major League Soccer, seeing two seasons with the New York Red Bulls, seven with Toronto FC and 17 appearances under head coach Bruce Arena in New England.
Altidore managed 75 goals and 24 assists in 185 appearances in the American league, setting him up for a new challenge in Mexico.
With the help of the American striker, Puebla stands in ninth on the table with 13 points in 10 games and a record of 2W-1L-7D. He’s recorded one goal in three games, scoring against Xolos to earn the 3-3 draw.
