The night that began with a guard of honour for Real Sociedad ended in a mass melee at Anoeta. In the aftermath, Juan Iglesias delivered a forthright mixed-zone account, alleging Mikel Oyarzabal insulted his wife while concealing his mouth.
According to AS, viewpoints diverged sharply, with talk of provocations and even old grievances, and Oyarzabal later sought an explanation from the Getafe defender. Images also showed Luis Milla and Oyarzabal squaring up.
At 27, Iglesias has form for breaking football’s unwritten keep-it-on-the-pitch code, preferring to air grievances in front of microphones. After a spiky meeting with Barcelona last season, he said Gavi mocked Getafe’s relegation fight by telling them they were heading for the second tier.
He also criticised Vinícius Júnior following a bruising game against Real Madrid, calling elements of the Brazilian’s behaviour disrespectful and urging him to look inward.
His interventions have not been reserved for rivals. At Mestalla last season he confronted sections of his own travelling support to defend Soria and demanded respect for a squad he felt were giving everything.
In the wider context, football’s authorities are eyeing the habit of players covering their mouths while speaking. After the Benfica versus Real Madrid incident involving Prestianni and Vinícius, FIFA want that gesture punished on the grounds it can conceal abuse.
For some, Iglesias is a vigilante breaking unwritten pacts, for others a leader unafraid to speak out.
