Juan Mata has joked about finally becoming a Premier League champion after reports that an independent commission has delivered its verdict on Manchester City’s long-running financial case. According to Goal.com, City have been found guilty on most charges, with 114 of 115 allegations reportedly upheld.

The former Manchester United midfielder, at the club from 2014 to 2022, was often part of sides finishing behind their neighbours during City’s era of dominance. He made the remarks while working on television coverage of the Nations League meeting between England and Spain.

Mata said the outcome could directly affect him, quipping that although he has won trophies he has never lifted the league, then asking whether he now might. He referenced Rodri’s view that titles are decided on the pitch, adding that while he understands that perspective, the question of what is right remains.

Manchester City have consistently denied wrongdoing and maintain they have irrefutable evidence to support their position.

Any appeal would delay any sanction, which could include fines, points deductions or other penalties. Under Rule W.51.7, the commission has wide scope to set proportionate punishments following the four-year investigation covering 2009 to 2018.

City are widely expected to appeal, with a 14-day window from the decision to file. The case would then be heard by a separate three-person panel led by former High Court judge Sir Gary Hickinbottom, whose ruling is final under Premier League protocol and not open to CAS.
