Last week Juanmi came off injured in the early minutes of Real Betis’ game against HJK Helsinki in the first round of the Europa League group stages.
It was communicated that the Spaniard tore his ankle ligaments and would need to undergo surgery.
As reported by Marca, the surgery in Barcelona was successful and Juanmi can begin his recovery. He is not expected to be fit until at least January 2023, meaning he will definitely not be available for selection by Luis Enrique for Spain’s World Cup campaign in Qatar later this year.
The 29-year-old was Real Betis’ top scorer in La Liga last season with 16 goals in 20 games.
Manuel Pellegrini has not been lucky with injuries so far this season. Nabil Fekir injured his calf during Los Verdiblancos’ match against Real Madrid, while Luiz Felipe had to be withdrawn during yesterday’s Europa League match against Ludogorets Razgrad.
