Juarez Tanque, Grêmio’s fourth-highest scorer, dies aged 97

Juarez Teixeira, known as Tanque, died on Monday morning aged 97. The former centre-forward is Grêmio’s fourth-highest goalscorer. The cause of death was not confirmed.
According to Globo.com, the club expressed its sorrow at his passing.
Tanque played for Grêmio from 1955 to 1962, winning five state titles in that period and the South Brazilian championship in 1962. He also won the Pan American title with the national team in 1956.
He was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame in 1996, then at the Olímpico. From 1983 to 2013 he served as a club councillor.
In 2023, Grêmio welcomed him to the Arena for a 95th-birthday tribute. He received a plaque, a pennant listing his honours and a shirt.
Also called Leão do Olímpico, he scored 205 goals in 306 appearances for Grêmio. He trails only Alcindo, Tarciso and Gessy in the club’s scoring charts.
