Jude Bellingham has grafted on and off the pitch to reclaim a starting spot for England, who face Ghana on Tuesday at 22:00 in the second group game. That prospect looked remote before the World Cup.

According to L'Équipe, since January 2025 Thomas Tuchel put him behind Morgan Rogers for No 10 role, omitted him from an October camp despite fitness and labelled his on-field demeanour potentially off-putting.

Euro 2024 summed up the paradox, an overhead equaliser at 90+5 against Slovakia in a 2-1 last-16 win, but discontent over tactical discipline and a touchline exchange with Gareth Southgate during the 1-2 final loss to Spain.

The reset came in the final warm-up, a 3-0 win over Costa Rica on 10 June in Orlando, when he started for the first time since November, hit 93% passing and worked tirelessly off the ball.

He backed it up last Wednesday in Dallas, carrying the ball and scoring on 47 minutes to make it 3-2 in a 4-2 victory over Croatia. Dan Burn noted how an early thunderous tackle set the tone.

Off the pitch he has stuck to team protocols, taking treatment within camp rather than Madrid and fronting Lions’ Den, BBC and FIFA duties. He has also said he can help from the bench or as a starter.

Even so, there are signs Tuchel aims to give Rogers significant minutes alongside Harry Kane as the tournament unfolds. After a spell on the margins, Bellingham is probably not yet irreplaceable.
