Vasco’s bid to stage their Copa Sudamericana semi-final second leg against Boca Juniors at the Maracanã has been rejected by a judge. PaponaColina reports that Judge Adriana Marques dos Santos Laia Franco denied the club’s urgent injunction aimed at compelling Fla-Flu Serviços to release the stadium for 20 October.
The ruling leaves Vasco without a guarantee of the Maracanã and the club may appeal to the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice.
The judge centred her decision on conflicting technical documents from both sides about the state of the pitch.
Vasco had leaned on a Military Police note recommending the Maracanã, but the judge found it only compared the venue with São Januário. The decision also cites another Police document deeming Nilton Santos viable, the alternative backed by the consortium.
The club must inform Conmebol by Saturday, 10 October, which stadium within the city of Rio it will use.
Without the Maracanã, Nilton Santos is the most concrete option in Rio. It has synthetic turf, which Vasco view as a sporting disadvantage. São Januário remains out because it does not meet the 30,000 minimum capacity required for the semi-finals.
The first leg is scheduled for 13 October at 21:30 at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires.
