Judge sets jury for Corinthians fans accused over 2012 Palmeiras deaths | OneFootball

Judge Flávia Castellar Oliverio has set 5 October for the first jury session in the case over the 2012 deaths of two Palmeiras supporters after clashes with Corinthians fans on Avenida Inajar de Souza, in northern São Paulo. According to Globo.com, this will open the trial.

There are 20 defendants. 10 Corinthians fans, charged with homicide, will be tried first, while 10 Palmeiras supporters, charged with criminal association, will face a separate session at a later date that is yet to be set.

The split aims to manage numbers and security. Defendants and witnesses are barred from wearing clothing or accessories that reference either club. Four days have been reserved for the first stage, from 5 to 9 October.

The confrontation happened on 25 March 2012, when two buses carrying Corinthians fans approached a group of Palmeiras supporters gathered for that Sunday's derby. Two Palmeiras fans, André Alves Lezo and Guilherme Vinícius Jovanelli Moreira, were killed.

Initial hearings in 2016 coincided with fresh violence that caused another death. On 3 April, the day of Corinthians v Palmeiras, José Sinval Batista de Carvalho, 53, was struck by a stray bullet, he had no link to organised fan groups. The following day, the state public security department ordered São Paulo derbies to be played with a single set of fans, a measure still in force.
