Judge suspends Vasco case over Maracanã bid to face Boca Juniors

Vasco's bid to stage Boca Juniors at the Maracanã was paused on Friday, as the judge of the 2ª Vara Cível da Comarca da Capital suspended the club's case against Fla-Flu Serviços S.A. According to PaponaColina, the injunction request was neither heard nor denied, so the dispute remains open.

The judge acknowledged a separate action, now on appeal at the Tribunal de Justiça do Rio de Janeiro (TJ-RJ), over the same availability for Vasco x Boca. That popular action, brought by an associate, saw judge Georgia Vasconcellos of the 2ª Vara da Fazenda Pública da Capital refuse an injunction on Tuesday, 29.

To avoid conflicting rulings, the 2ª Vara Cível magistrate halted Vasco's case, while noting the two lawsuits rest on different legal grounds. The order sets a timetable, with Fla-Flu Serviços given 48 hours to respond before a 20 day suspension.

If the TJ-RJ instructs the 2ª Vara Cível to analyse Vasco's plea, the injunction could yet be considered, so the outcome partly hinges on the tribunal.

The calendar is tight. The semi-final is set for 20 October, and Conmebol requires the stadium to be confirmed by five October, a timeline the 20 day pause would overshoot and which increases pressure for a swift TJ-RJ response.

Vasco went to court after the consortium rejected the booking on Monday, 28, citing poor pitch conditions and a run of fixtures at the ground. The club argues São Januário does not meet Conmebol's minimum 30,000 capacity from the semi-finals and cites a 2025 Memorando de Entendimentos providing for Maracanã use in CBF, FIFA or Conmebol competitions, with any refusal based on technical and operational criteria.

In its petition, the club seeks immediate release of the stadium, equal treatment to rivals and a daily fine of R$ one million for non-compliance. President Pedrinho has the Polícia Militar do Rio’s view that the Maracanã is the most suitable venue, and both Conmebol and the Ferj support Vasco's use. It is the third Fla-Flu veto of 2026, after blocks on matches with Vitória and Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil.
