Julian Brandt has explained his decision to join Ajax, saying the club’s identity and Johan Cruijff’s influence aligned with his game.

The 30-year-old former Germany international moved to Amsterdam on a free after seven years at Borussia Dortmund, once his contract expired. He had interest from several clubs but chose the Eredivisie side. According to BuLi News, he viewed Ajax as the right fit.

Brandt said Ajax’s DNA and philosophy suit him, and that Cruijff’s ideas sparked something in him and remain central to how the club plays.

Technical director Jordi Cruijff was reportedly a key figure in persuading him to move. Ajax contacted his representatives after his Dortmund exit, seeing his experience and creativity as valuable for the squad.

Brandt leaves Dortmund after 307 competitive appearances, with 42 goals and 51 assists. His departure closed a seven-year spell, with BVB deciding against extending his expiring deal.
