The goalkeeper and captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen left FC Barcelona in the last winter transfer window to join Girona on loan, and his main motivation to do so was to get regular playing time at club level ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

However, in only his second game for Michel’s side, the German goalie tore his hamstring, for which he also had to undergo surgery, which will keep him out of action for around 4 months.

This situation indicates that Ter Stegen would once again not be able to become the regular starter for his national side, having spent almost his entire international career in the shadow of Manuel Neuer.

The degree of bleakness of his chances of being named in the next call-up for the national team was quite apparent as the German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann recently addressed the media during the UEFA Nations League draw. In this regard, the coach said:

“There are three things to consider regarding the goalkeeper position… To begin with, the tragic injury, which I deeply regret.”

“Out of respect for the player, I will never rule him out completely because it is his turn… However, we have to make the right decision for him and for us. And at the moment, the situation is not favorable.”

Barcelona fans would only be hoping that things get right for Marc-Andre ter Stegen as soon as possible so he can finally play an important role in his national team in what is highly likely to be his last World Cup.
