Speaking at his press conference, Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann was asked about Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz and his recent form in England.

The 22-year-old reports to the camp following a 3-0 loss to Manchester City, and as a result, he has been used as a scapegoat for some of their performances.

On Wirtz’s form (via @iMiaSanMia), Nagelsmann said:

“I always speak to Flo, regardless of his situation. It’s a very complex and difficult situation when you look at his club. Last year they won the Premier League and played very attractive football. This year a few players left them, and they invested a lot of money on new players. So the entire mix is very complex – each of the 5 attacking players wants to be the ‘star player’, this situation doesn’t make it easy for Flo – because the entire club is not as stable as they were last season. I watched the game against City and they were the worse team over 90 minutes. It’s not easy for Flo to put his mark in such a situation. We can see that a lot of players struggle when they move to another club where there have been many changes. In the end I can’t influence his performances at Liverpool. I can only influence what he does here. I think he made steps in the right direction in October. We all know what he can do, it’s normal to have a dip in form. We’ll help and support him to keep a clear head”

In the previous international break, Nagelsmann defended Wirtz, showcasing his impact on the team, despite failing to register an assist in the Premier League

Wirtz’s time at Liverpool:

In the opening three months of the season, Liverpool have struggled to carry on their title-winning form from last term. The large overhaul of players in the summer has affected the team chemistry, and it is still taking time for the older players to gain an understanding with the newer ones.

Add to this, there are inherent problems in their style of play, and a large amount of the squad are also out of form. There have been flashes of what he can do, most notably against Real Madrid.

Has Wirtz performed to his best ability? No. But it is also not entirely his fault, with the Köln native playing several passes for his teammates to miss.
