Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down as Germany head coach after the 2026 World Cup last 32 exit to Paraguay. The DFB said in a statement that his contract ends with immediate effect, and that it wants Jürgen Klopp to replace him.

Germany were beaten after a 1-1 draw, losing 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay. Earlier in his tenure, Nagelsmann’s side went out of Euro 2024 in the quarter-finals to Spain, 2-1 after extra time.

Nagelsmann, 38, took charge in September 2023, succeeding Hansi Flick. He oversaw 37 matches, winning 23, drawing six and losing eight.

He submitted his resignation on Thursday at a confidential meeting, following days of reflection after the defeat. He said he had consulted trusted people personally and within the federation, and that the decision was extremely difficult.

Jürgen Klopp, now Red Bull’s global director of football, is being targeted for the role. Talks are planned with the former Liverpool manager, who has already expressed interest.
