Speaking (via @iMiaSanMia) after Germany’s 3-3 draw against Italy in the second leg of the Nations League quarter-finals, head coach Julian Nagelsmann evaluated the performance.
In the game in Dortmund on Sunday night, Germany stormed into a 3-0 lead in the first half thanks to a penalty from Joshua Kimmich, a goal from a (very) quick corner by Jamal Musiala and a Tim Kleindienst header. However, in the second half, Germany allowed the visitors to get back into the game with Moise Kean scoring a brace and a late Giacomo Raspadori nearly allowed them to take the tie to extra time.
On the overall performance, Nagelsmann said:
“I think the first half was the best we’ve had [under him as coach]. We were great with the ball and aggressive defensively and scored 3 goals. In the second half we had to make changes because not everyone was able to play for 90 minutes. We conceded the first, then the second, then there was doubt. The biggest problem was that we played too many passes backwards, unlike the first half. I don’t want to talk too much about the second half. I think the biggest conclusion from these two games is that we know what we can do, but we still have to improve. It was great for our development”
The win means Germany qualify for the finals of the Nations League, which will be hosted in Germany. They will face Portugal in the first semi-final at the Allianz Arena in Munich while Spain and France face off in the other game in Stuttgart. If Germany wins, it will set up a final once again in Munich.
Germany also found out their World Cup Qualifying group, ahead of beginning their quest to make it to the World Cup next year. For Germany, qualifying will begin later this year.
The next time Germany will be in action will be in June when they play the Nations League finals.
