QPR boss Julien Stephan has explained the much-speculated saga surrounding Rayan Kolli amid the Algerian prodigy's lack of involvement so far in the 2026/27 campaign, which has begun in positive fashion for the Hoops following an exciting summer transfer window.

Stephan's side are positioned in fifth place and remain just two points shy of Championship league-leaders West Ham United and Swansea City, having taken three victories, three draws and only one defeat from their opening seven fixtures ahead of Saturday afternoon's home clash against strugglers Preston North End.

QPR have not finished higher than 15th in each of the last four campaigns, although some eye-catching activity throughout the summer has raised expectations and restored hope among supporters as Stephan's second season in West London heads underway.

The Loftus Road faithful have, however, expressed concern with no shortage of questions regarding the mysterious absence of Kolli, who, despite establishing himself as a breakout star over the last two terms in limited minutes and remaining physically fit, has not appeared in a single matchday squad for QPR so far this season.

Now, with pressure growing on the 21-year-old's situation to be clarified, Stephan has lifted the lid on the current state of play with one of QPR's most divisive players.

Kolli's extended absence from the team has divided opinion and created confusion among supporters in spite of QPR's strong start to the season, with fans having been increasingly desperate to find out exactly why the talented forward remains so far down in Stephan's thinking.

Those reasons now appear much clearer following a fan's forum event which was attended by both Stephan himself and Hoops CEO Christian Nourry.

The pair were unsurprisingly questioned on Kolli's situation, and while Nourry explained that the R's academy product rejected several unsuitable loan options in the summer after demanding more minutes at first-team level, Stephan provided insight as to why he hasn't been featuring.

The Frenchman emphasised the importance of a collective buy-in from the group in order to bridge the gap between themselves and the Championship promotion pack, drumming home 'non-negotiables' of hard-work and commitment each day in training that, it would appear, Kolli is falling short of matching at this moment in time.

"The situation is very clear for Rayan like with the other players, my door is always open,' Stephan explained.

"I love the players, we spend more time with the players than I do with my children, so we need to love our players. It's not simple for me to guarantee anything, the only thing I can guarantee is to help and support them and give everything.

"But, in fact, the question for us now is how we can bridge the gap between the best teams and us. That is just the reality. I think the last three of four years, we've finished 15th as the best position and that's it.

"I think it's a bit frustrating for you (the fans) and it is for us and the players as well, so the main question now is how we can reduce the gap between the best teams and us.

"The only answer I can give you right now is to put the standouts here and to put the level here. If we do that, if we have a full involvement and commitment and players willing to work everyday, we will reduce the gap.

"This is the only thing I want to see on the pitch, because the pitch never lies. It's never a coincidence when you have some good results, and it's never a coincidence when you have some bad results.

"How do you think the players found a way to collect a point against West Brom last Saturday without Jimmy (Dunne), (Tariq) Lamptey, (Ilias) Chair, (Richard) Kone and (Karamoko) Dembele on the pitch? Because of the last two months, they have done a lot on the pitch every day.

"This is the only way to reduce the gap.

"At the start of the season, we played certain games - six in pre-season and seven league games. How did they find the way to lose only one, against Middlesbrough who were in the play-off final in May, spent £50 million in the transfer market and we only lost 1-0?

"They have found the way because they have some talent, of course, but also because they work hard and are fully committed every day on the pitch. They give everything every day, and this is the only way.

"So my door is always open for all the players, but there are some things that are non-negotiable - involvement, hard work and commitment. And seeing collectively, first.

"We play a collective sport, football is a collective sport. So it's connection between the players, this is just the situation.

"We want the best for all the players, but we have to select the best option for us to respect the things that are non-negotiable. This is the only message that I want to send, and the other is that the door is always open.

"The lads, they know. If they deserve something, they will have the opportunity to play.

"Why, in the last two games, do you think that I decided to put Leon Scarlett, just 17 years old, on the pitch? Because he deserved it, he showed before during all the training sessions that it was the right moment for him to be on the pitch.

"There's never coincidence, football is logical and when you deserve, you have (the opportunity).

Rayan Kolli has impressed in limited minutes for QPR

Players won't simply be picked on talent level alone, and Kolli's present predicament proves precisely that.

The ex-Algerian youth international burst into life during the 2024/25 campaign, scoring his first senior goals through a brace in a 3-0 rout of Norwich City in December 2024 before finishing the season with four strikes from just 819 minutes of league football.

Kolli's match minutes and starts were fairly minimal last time out as Stephan took charge, however, with merely 10 of the skillful forward's 23 Championship appearances coming as a starter at a rate of 0.43 goals per 90 minutes from five overall.

The QPR prospect has featured 57 times for the Hoops across all competitions with a collective total of 2,310 minutes of football under his belt - equating to 25 90's - meaning his return of eleven goals and four assists is certainly impressive and shows just how efficient he can be without playing on a regular basis.

Ultimately, though, Kolli has failed to meet Stephan's standards and supporters will naturally share the 45-year-old's unwavering approach to demanding strong commitment, selflessness and work-ethic from his players.

It's frustrating for all involved, and the fact of the matter is that Kolli's enormous natural quality and promise means he should be much further in his development than he really is, having not yet laid down his marker as a consistent starter at Loftus Road.

These days, he's not even making the matchday squad behind untested teenagers in Stephan's pecking order, and though Kolli does have the likes of Kone and Rumarn Burrell to compete with, the reason why he is not battling to oust one of the pair has been made clear and it has nothing to do with ability.

The gauntlet has been laid down and the ball now finds itself very much in Kolli's court, with the mercurial forward perhaps already at a make-or-break stage of his R's career as he needs to decide whether to heed Stephan's advice and work that bit harder to climb the ranks and come good on his potential - or not.
