Júlio César fielded calls before Jorge Jesus arrived at Flamengo | OneFootball

According to Coluna Do Fla, Júlio César says he briefed Flamengo officials and senior players before Jorge Jesus joined in 2019.

He recalls Marcos Braz calling to ask about Jesus. He urged the club to act fast because Jesus was awaiting a proposal from Porto, and said the coach wanted to manage Portugal’s three biggest clubs.

As talks progressed, Diego Ribas, Diego Alves, Tannure and others sought his view. He told them Jesus had a particular way of working, and that if they embraced his ideas they would win everything.

César spoke from experience, having played under Jesus at Benfica. His role was to make those involved aware of who was arriving.

Jesus became one of Flamengo’s most successful coaches. In 2019 he won the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa Libertadores, ending long droughts in both competitions.

Early in 2020 he added the Supercopa do Brasil, the Recopa Sul-Americana and the Campeonato Carioca. He left a little over a year after taking charge.

Since leaving Flamengo, he has managed Neymar at Al Hilal and Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr. He has now taken charge of the Portugal national team, focusing on the 2030 World Cup cycle.

While Jesus is with the national team, Flamengo prepare for their next assignment. They face Santos in the Brasileirão on Thursday, eight October, at 19:30 Brasília time at Vila Belmiro.
