The Netherlands have been dealt a significant setback ahead of the World Cup after Jurrien Timber was ruled out of the tournament through injury.

The Arsenal defender has failed to recover from the groin problem he suffered during the Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and will now leave the Dutch camp.

Timber had initially been included in Ronald Koeman's squad, but further medical assessments concluded that he would not be fit enough to play at the tournament.

The 24-year-old had been working to regain full fitness in recent weeks and even made a brief appearance in Arsenal's Champions League final defeat. However, the Netherlands medical staff decided against taking any risks that could worsen the injury.

Timber's absence is a major blow for Koeman given his importance to the side and ability to play across the back line.

Lutsharel Geertruida has been called up as his replacement and will take Timber's place in the final 26-man squad.
