Celtic last night started our Champions League campaign in the most impressive way possible as the Bhoys recorded our biggest ever win in the Champions League group stages…

Five goals by five different scorers as we trounced a stunned Slovan Bratislava and we could easily have scored five more to outscore our main rivals Bayern Munich.

Liam Scales who was a worthy Man of the Match got us off the mark by thumping in a powerful header which was assisted by the impressive Arne Engels direct from a corner kick. However had Callum McGregor, or Daizen Maeda, or Alistair Johnston or Arne Engels etc etc got the MOTM nod then no-one could have argued. This was a sparkling performance from a Celtic team at long last back to being competitive at this level. And this is only the beginning.

Kyogo, that man Arne Engels from the spot once more, Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah completed the scoring on a terrific night at Paradise under the lights as Celtic collected an additional £2m plus for the win and the goals. Slovan Bratislava, a decent side who have done brilliantly to outperform the likes of theRangers to make it through the qualifiers and from a starting point of the first round on qualifiers, were made to look ordinary. In fact they are indeed the worst ever side I’ve seen play at Celtic Park at this stage of the competition, but it’s the elite level of club football and they have done ever so well to reach this stage for the first time.

You can only play what’s in front of you, and Celtic took full advantage. Not only did we pile on the agony and put on the style, we won an opening game in the Champions League for the first time ever to sit second in the new look competition, behind only Bayern Munich who won 9-2 against Dinamo Zagreb, who Celtic play away from home on Tuesday 10 December.

It’s only the start, and tougher tasks are ahead, but I’m sure we can all enjoy the moment and look forward to the upcoming games with added confidence. And what a noise the Celtic support made last night!
