„Just get on with it“: Gnabry remains calm after Arsenal defeat

FC Bayern conceded their first defeat of the current season in the Champions League top match against FC Arsenal. After the 3-1 defeat in London, Serge Gnabry tried to put things into perspective on DAZN – and found clear words on the dominance of the opponent, his own problems in building up the game and the question of the lack of intensity.

Gnabry, who had set up Lennart Karl’s remarkable equalizer in the meantime, made it clear that, in his view, the defeat was less down to Bayern than to their superior opponents. „Arsenal are a very strong opponent. They haven’t won all their games so far for nothing,“ explained the winger, referring to the English side’s current form.

The Premier League giants were the more dominant team for long stretches. „They’re a very strong team, very dominant,“ Gnabry continued.

Munich found it particularly difficult to create controlled phases of possession in the second half. According to Gnabry, Bayern had great difficulty freeing themselves from the Gunners‘ pressure: „It felt like we had very few phases of possession in the second half.“ The attacking player even spoke of scenes in which Arsenal literally constricted FCB: „They had a phase where they pressed us in behind with four or five corner kicks.“

Bayern didn’t manage enough going forward either. „We didn’t manage much going forward,“ admitted Gnabry openly. An unsparing analysis that underlined just how dominant Arsenal were.

„You have to accept it when you lose“

From the outside, it looked at times as if Bayern lacked the final consistency, but Gnabry refused to confirm this narrative. „I don’t know if they necessarily had more gallantry, but you have to accept it when you lose.“ A remarkable statement that shows that, for the 30-year-old, the defeat was less to do with mental aspects and more to do with the opponent’s superiority in terms of play.

Despite the setback, Gnabry sees no reason for actionism. He pointed to the German record champions‘ previously flawless record in the top flight: „We’ve won all the Champions Leagues so far … we’ve had a great run like no other.“ The route for the coming weeks is therefore clear for him: „I don’t think we need to make any mistakes or work on anything, but simply carry on as before.“
