In a major update, Carlos Monfort of SPORT reports that Barcelona have reached an agreement to extend Frenkie de Jong’s contract for a further three years until 2029.

The decision comes after weeks of intense negotiations in which the player’s representatives maintained constant contact with the club’s sporting director, Deco.

De Jong’s renewal had become a priority for Barcelona, considering that his existing contract expires at the end of the season.

Things were slow because of some issues with his former agent, Ali Dursun, but everything went smoothly once the Dutchman secured new representation a few months ago.

A face-to-face summit, a few weeks ago, proved decisive in moving the operation forward.

During that meeting, De Jong’s representatives expressed the player’s wish to renew as soon as possible and to facilitate the process without creating obstacles, something which was very well received by the club.

The harmony between both parties has been absolute. Both the player and the club shared the view that it was necessary to resolve the matter swiftly, especially as it had been a source of tension in the past.

The discussions are now so advanced that the parties have already begun the process of exchanging documents.

De Jong has given his definitive approval to the contract, and the club’s general director, Manel del Rio, has been the first to sign in order to authorise the operation.

In the coming days, the remaining formalities will be completed. Only the signatures of president Joan Laporta and vice-president Rafa Yuste are outstanding, along with other members of the board of directors, which are expected imminently.

The expectation is that within a maximum of one week, everything will be officially concluded.

De Jong has demonstrated that he is a fundamental piece in Hansi Flick’s midfield, serving as one of the cornerstones of the team’s structure. And, with this renewal, Barcelona secure the continuity of a key figure in their sporting project.
