Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is reportedly destined to linger at the club beyond the current campaign and could even pen a new contract.

Since his arrival in January 2020, the Portuguese playmaker has been the club’s best player. Despite being on the wrong side of 30, the MUFC skipper has taken his game to a whole new level this season and has been named the Premier League’s Player of the Year.

While this award is often handed to a league winner, no Arsenal player came close to rivalling Bruno’s ‘exceptional’ exploits. The 31-year-old has already equalled Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne’s assist record by creating 20 goals this season, and he will have the opportunity to set a new record on the final day of the season against Crystal Palace.

Man Utd & Bruno Fernandes open to signing new contract

With the former Sporting CP star hitting his stride, Man Utd fans are hoping to keep him at the club for years to come.

However, there have been several speculations surrounding Bruno’s future, especially with his contract expiring in June 2027.

Some sources have suggested that United should sell the skipper this summer before he leaves as a free agent.

Nevertheless, Man Utd insider Sully expects Fernandes to stick around for years to come, revealing that the two parties could soon negotiate a new contract.

“Bruno Fernandes is happy at MUFC and has had meetings with the club in recent months with a general expectation being that he’ll stay beyond the summer,” posted the journalist on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“There’s been some speculation regarding his release clause but that isn’t expected to be an issue. A new contract hasn’t been ruled out.”

Why keeping Fernandes is vital for Man Utd

At the age of 31, Fernandes is producing some of the best football of his career, especially after being paired with top-notch attackers like Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko this season.

In the current day and age, we have seen world-class players delivering the goods despite their advanced playing age. 40-year-old Luka Modric is a prime example of a playmaker who continues to defy Father Time thanks to his remarkable professionalism and sheer determination.

Based on Bruno’s demeanour and obsession with the sport, we have every reason to believe he still has many good years in the tank. Hence, ditching the captain just because he surpassed 30 would be a grave mistake on Man Utd’s part.
