Just in: Gabriel Jesus to wear the No. 9 shirt at Barcelona | OneFootball

Only moments ago, FC Barcelona announced the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal on the deadline day of the summer transfer window.

The 29-year-old Brazilian striker arrives in a deal worth €10 million plus another €4 million add-ons, while the Gunner retain a 20% future sell-on clause.

Jesus has signed a three-year contract with the La Liga champions running until 2029, contrary to initial reports which suggested that he would be penning a 2+1 year contract.

No. 9 for Jesus

Building on that, Jijantes FC now reports that Jesus will be given the No. 9 shirt at Barcelona this season.

The No. 9 jersey has been left vacant this season following the summer departure of club icon Robert Lewandowski, who said goodbye after his contract expired.

The Catalans were saving the shirt for their marquee striker signing, Julian Alvarez, but a move for the Atletico Madrid centre-forward did not materialise despite his deep desire to join the club.

As such, the vacant No. 9 jersey will now have a new owner in the form of Jesus.

The Brazilian striker has worn the No. 9 for the past eight seasons – five with Arsenal and three with Manchester City, and will continue to do so at Barcelona, at least for the ongoing season.

An iconic shirt

Throughout Barcelona’s history, the No. 9 shirt has been worn by some of the greatest players and club icons.

Indeed, the likes of Joan Gamper, Laszlo Kubala, Johan Cruyff, Eusebio, Gary Lineker, Michael Laudrup, Hristo Stoichkov, Romario, Ronaldo, and Patrick Kluivert have donned the #9 Blaugrana jersey.

In recent history, the shirt has been worn by greats such as Samuel Eto’o, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Luis Suarez, and the aforementioned Lewandowski.

Now, it will be Jesus who inherits the legendary shirt at Barcelona, hoping to make an impact at Barcelona.

The striker arrives after a couple of difficult years at Arsenal affected due to an ACL injury he sustained back in January 2025. Therefore, the signing represents a big gamble for the Blaugrana, but one that could pay off.
