Over the weekend, it emerged that FC Barcelona had made a move to sign Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal to strengthen the No. 9 position.

After their efforts to sign Julian Alvarez all through the summer ended up futile, the Catalans quickly moved for the Brazilian as a likely stop-gap situation.

Jesus arrived in Catalonia on Monday and is expected to be officially unveiled as a new Barcelona player later today.

Three-year contract for Gabriel Jesus

Initial reports suggested that Jesus would sign for two seasons with an optional third year.

However, according to the latest update from Mundo Deportivo, the agreement will instead run for three guaranteed seasons, meaning the 29-year-old striker will sign a three-year deal with Barcelona until the summer of 2029.

Jesus successfully completed his medical on Monday ahead of the move. Soon upon arriving in the Catalan capital, the striker addressed concerns over his fitness, insisting that his knee is “perfect” following the ACL injury he suffered in 2025.

While waiting for the announcement of the transfer, Jesus watched his new teammates thrash Rayo Vallecano from the Spotify Camp Nou’s directors’ box on Monday.

Once his contract is signed, the Brazilian will begin working under Hansi Flick and will be registered with La Liga, making him available for the next match against Valencia.

A gamble worth taking?

With Raphinha excelling as a No. 9 in the opening matches, he seems likely to continue as Flick’s preferred starter, with Jesus arriving to provide depth in the position.

Barcelona will shell out a transfer fee of €10 million plus another €4 million in add-ons to sign Jesus from Arsenal, who will also retain a 20% future sell-on clause.

Concerns about his fitness, injury-prone nature and lack of rhythm are understandable, making the deal a gamble.

Nonetheless, at that fee, bringing in a player of Jesus’ experience and pedigree, feels like a shrewd operation. Furthermore, the Brazilian international’s style of play fits well into Flick’s philosophy.

So, if Barcelona manage his workload carefully and ensure that he stays fit, they can reap rewards from the investment.
