The Bianconeri got off to the best possible start at the FIFA Club World Cup, defeating UAE side Al-Ain 5-0 in Washington, thanks to two braces from Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao and a beautiful finish from Kenan Yildiz.
Juventus started out on the front foot, despite Al-Ain's high press in the opening minutes. After an initial attempt by Al Ain through Facundo Zabala (his left-footed shot saved by Michele Di Gregorio in the 9th minute), the Bianconeri took the lead in the 11th minute: Alberto Costa's perfect cross from the left was met by the head of Kolo Muani in the penalty area to make it 1-0.
Igor Tudor's side continued to push forward and in the 21st minute they doubled their lead: Conceicao received the ball in the box, dribbled past an opponent and slotted the ball in at the near post. The third goal came in the 31st minute, again from open play, and it was a gem from Yildiz, who controlled a pass from Khephren Thuram on the edge of the area before beating Rui Patricio with a precise right-footed strike. The ball clipped the inside of the post on its way into the back of the net: 3-0 to Juventus during a strong showing.
Juve came close to finding another, firstly via Yildiz's left-footed volley from a tricky position, which hit the side netting, and then through Lloyd Kelly's header from a corner, but the Englishman's effort flew just wide of Rui Patricio's right-hand post. The fourth goal came in added time at the end of the first half. Thuram was again at the heart of proceedings, picking out Kolo Muani on the edge of the area: the French striker controlled the ball and, with an elegant finish with the outside of his right foot, beat Rui Patricio for the second time. It was 4-0 to Tudor's side, who ended the first half in total control following a clinical performance in front of goal.
The second half began with a wake-up call for the Bianconeri defence. In the first minute, Al-Ain found the back of the net through Ramy Rabia, but the goal was ruled out. Shortly afterwards, Di Gregorio came to the rescue, stretching out his arm to make a world-class reflex save to deny Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba's close-range effort.
After a more controlled start to the second period, the Bianconeri scored again in the 58th minute: once again it was Francisco Conceicao who found the net, for the second time in the game. The Portuguese winger received the ball in behind and made it 5-0 with a precise left-footed finish to wrap up the scoring. The Bianconeri maintained constant control of the encounter, going close to scoring again in the 66th minute with Kolo Muani, who called Rui Patricio into action, and the again right at the end with Douglas Luiz hitting the post.
The adventure in the United States gets off to the best possible start.
