Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz reportedly offered an apology to Lazio defender Patric for his violent act after Saturday’s encounter between the two clubs.

The Bianconeri prevailed thanks to a late own-goal from Mario Gila, but the Biancocelesti voiced their displeasure with the refereeing. The club’s sporting director Angelo Fabiani even called for the VAR to be abolished in his post-match rant.

Lazio were reduced to ten men when VAR intervened to request an on-field review which led to Alessio Romagnoli’s dismissal. However, the Aquile felt Douglas Luiz should have been sent off as well for punching Patric late in the match.

So according to Il Corriere dello Sport, the Brazilian apologized to the Spaniard in the parking area after the contest. As the source tells it, Lazio considered it a further sign of guilt on the Brazilian’s part, as the club directors insist they were hard-done by the officiating for the third time this season, in a reference to the defeats in Udine and Florence.

Referee designator Gianluca Rocchi also admitted that had Luiz been sent off, it wouldn’t have warranted a review.

The clash was certainly not fortuitous and we don’t like this behavior, so if he had been sent off on the pitch, no one would have said anything. But it doesn’t constitute a clear refereeing mistake. The yellow card is definitely missing, at the very least, but a red card wouldn’t have been a scandal. This behavior has nothing to do with the sporting aspect. There is a gesture that is more than a half-push, compared to a sharp blow, but we don’t like it.
