Liverpool sold Tyler Morton for £9m

That’s exactly what happened with Tyler Morton - who had a stunning loan spell with Hull City during the 2023/24 season.

Expected to make a first-team breakthrough under Arne Slot the 2024/25 campaign was instead a frustrating one for the England under-21 international - who remained on the sidelines.

But Lyon had seen enough in Morton to strike a deal - with it estimated that the French side paid around £9m for the midfielder plus another £4m due in bonuses.

Liverpool retained a stake in Morton in the shape of a sell-on clause - whereby the Anfield club stand to rake in 20 percent of any proceeds Lyon make on a deal for Morton.

Under contract until 2030 and establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1, Morton is going to go for a significant fee if and when Lyon decide to cash in.

And it could be sooner rather than later with Tutto Juve now claiming that Juventus are eyeing up a deal for the 23-year-old.

Lyon have done well out of selling players - banking huge fees for the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Alexandre Lacazette, Bradley Barcola, Ferland Mendy and Bruno Guimaraes just to name a few.

Morton could have been useful for Liverpool

If cash-strapped Lyon can command the kind of figure they got for Rayan Cherki from Manchester City - around £30m - then it would mean an additional £6m in Liverpool’s coffers.

It may well be a case of the one that got away for Morton however - with the club not retaining a buyback clause on the Lyon deal.

The Liverpool native has made a stunning start to his career in France and could easily have augmented the club’s scarce midfield resources this year.
