Reports of Kai Havertz’s injury have caught many by surprise. Having come on as a second-half substitute against Manchester United for a 31-minute cameo, he appeared fine. Some argued that, given Viktor Gyökeres’ limited impact, Havertz should start against Leeds.

Well, he will not. News broke that he was not spotted in training, with reports suggesting he had picked up a knee injury. While some assumed it was a minor issue that would see him return quickly and challenge Gyökeres for a starting spot, that does not appear to be the case.

Injury timeline a concern

BBC journalist Sami Mokbel has suggested the German international could be sidelined longer than expected. Speaking on the BBC’s Football Daily podcast, Mokbel explained:“He’s got a niggle in his knee, and it’s something that he’s concerned about. Arsenal are obviously concerned about it.

“From my understanding, he’s going to see a specialist or has already seen one. I’m now waiting for news on the severity of the results from those tests and scans.

“But I’m absolutely assured this isn’t a matter of days or even a couple of weeks. We’re looking at something longer term, at least a month out, maybe more, which is a massive blow for Arsenal.”

Eze boost and Gyökeres chance

Fortunately, Arsenal have acted swiftly, investing £68 million to bring in Eberechi Eze. The England international is expected to sharpen Arsenal’s attacking play. He is more than just a dribbler or ball carrier, he is also a player with end product, as dangerous inside the box as he is outside it.

Beyond Eze’s arrival, Gyökeres now has a golden opportunity to silence critics who have already labelled him a flop. Against United, it was clear Gyökeres and his new teammates had not yet struck an understanding. Having not played with a traditional goal poacher like him, they struggled to play to his strengths. With more time on the pitch together, some dangerous partnerships should begin to form.
