Kaiserslautern slipped from a promising position with a single point from the last three matches before the international break, but they have started this one brightly. Naatan Skyttä scored his first 2. Bundesliga brace with goals in the space of four minutes.
For the first one, the Finnish midfielder capitalized on Kiel’s inability to deal with Mika Haas’ delivery. Skyttä’s sixth goal of the season came after his superb linkup play with Ivan Prtajin and Semih Sahin.
Maxwell Gyamfi gave the visitors a lifeline when he made a reckless challenge on Adrián Kaprálik inside the penalty box. Alexander Bernhardsson stepped up to take the penalty as Kiel’s captain scored the third goal of the game before the half-hour mark.
The hosts showed nerves after conceding, but Haas restored the two-goal lead with his first goal in professional football. Both teams had more chances at the closing stage of the half, but it was the hosts who succeeded in extending their lead.
Skytta completed a first-half hat-trick with another superb finish in the last act before the half-time break. Kiel’s chances of an unlikely turnaround deal another blow when David Zec saw his second booking of the game five minutes after the restart.
Kaiserslautern ended the game with 28 shots, but Kiel scrambled to keep the scoreline despite playing almost the entire second-half with ten players. The hosts climbed to sixth with their first win in four matches.
