KAMBWALA returned to group training on Monday morning, months after hamstring surgery, giving Villarreal a timely defensive boost.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the French centre-back joined the open session at the Ciudad Deportiva on the eve of Reyes, bringing energy, competitiveness and his usual humour.

He sustained a serious left hamstring injury in the first week of August during a friendly against Genova, which required surgery. The recovery was set at around five months and that timeframe has now been met.

Having stepped up his workload in recent weeks, he is now close to receiving medical clearance to compete.

Midfielder Thomas Partey also returned to group work after a month out through injury.

Head coach Marcelino García Toral gains another defensive option before February, subject to that final green light in the coming weeks.
