Kane brace spares England's blushes

The England national team, led by FCB striker Harry Kane, were made to suffer for a nerve-wracking 75 minutes of their round of 32 match and even came close to suffering World Cup humiliation against football minnows the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who had taken a shock lead after just seven minutes thanks to a goal from Brian Cipenga. The Three Lions struggled to break down the Africans’ solid defence right up until the closing stages, with Harry Kane denied a penalty just before half-time.

But the FC Bayern striker refused to give up and was rewarded for his tireless running by first scoring the well-deserved equaliser with a header, before going on to net the winning goal – his fifth of the tournament – with a powerful shot under the bar to make it 2-1 (86'). The England captain's brace fired his team into the round of 16, where they face a difficult game against co-hosts Mexico on Monday, 6 July (kick-off 02:00 CEST).
