Harry Kane struck twice as Bayern Munich began their Champions League campaign with a 3–1 win over Chelsea at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

The German champions wasted little time, racing into a two-goal lead before the half-hour mark.

First, Trevoh Chalobah turned Michael Olise’s cross into his own net, and minutes later Kane calmly tucked away a penalty after being fouled by Moisés Caicedo.

The English side hit back almost immediately through Cole Palmer, who fired a superb finish past Manuel Neuer to give the visitors hope.

The Blues, under Enzo Maresca on his Champions League debut as manager, finished the first half strongly and briefly looked capable of forcing their way back.

But Kane had other ideas. Just after the hour, the England captain grabbed his second of the night with a precise finish, restoring Bayern’s cushion and killing off Chelsea’s momentum. Palmer thought he’d levelled things late on with another smart strike, only for the flag to deny him.

The result leaves Bayern with a perfect start, while Chelsea’s return to Europe’s top table begins with a setback - their first defeat of the season.
