Walter Kannemann is now officially a Brazilian citizen, completing naturalisation and freeing a foreign-player slot at Grêmio. The Argentine centre-back is nearing 10 years at the club after opening the passport process in 2024.

Globo.com reports that Grêmio now have 10 foreign players in the squad, while the CBF permits up to nine registrations in its competitions.

Paraguayan midfielder Villasanti remains out with a knee ligament injury, with a return expected in April. Danish forward Braithwaite is close to coming back after an Achilles tendon problem.

Recent arrivals Juan Nardoni and Leonel Peréz had taken the foreign contingent to 11, before parting with Colombian Cuéllar and Argentine Cristaldo, and sending Chilean Aravena out on loan. The group now comprises Nardoni, Pérez and Pavon, Monsalve and Enamorado, Balbuena and Villasanti, Noriega, Braithwaite and the Ghanaian naturalised Belgian Amuzu.

Signed in July 2016, Kannemann is Grêmio’s longest-serving player and was decisive in the 2016 Copa do Brasil and 2017 Libertadores titles. He lifted his seventh Gaúcho crown a week ago, not featuring in 2022. His deal runs to December 2027 and he has 338 appearances and five goals.
