Karim Benzema (38) could make an unlikely return to Ligue 1 before the closure of the transfer window, according to a report from Sacha Tavolieri.

The former Ballon d’Or winner remains under contract with Al-Ittihad for a further six months, however, he is now refusing to play for the Saudi Pro League side after what he considers to be an insulting contract extension offer.

A World Cup charge?

That offer, Tavolieri understands, included just image rights and did not include a salary. Benzema, as a result, feels insulted and unwelcome at Al-Ittihad.

It remains to be seen whether a resolution can be found, but a departure before the closure of the transfer window cannot be ruled out. In an interview with L’Équipe earlier this season, Benzema said “never say never” to a return to the France national team and a return to French soil this winter is a possibility, Tavolieri understands.
