Karim Benzema’s Saudi Pro League stint is over after Al Hilal confirmed on Monday that his contract had been ended by mutual consent. The 38-year-old departs after six months and becomes a free agent, with his next move uncertain.

L'Equipe has suggested the forward could step into an ambassadorial role rather than seek another playing contract, and there is speculation he may retire. He had a year left on his deal, heightening doubts over a return to the pitch.

The separation was amicable, and Benzema posted a message thanking team-mates, staff, supporters and the club, adding that a chapter of his career had ended and wishing Al Hilal well.

Benzema joined Al Hilal in February after a spell with Al Ittihad. Head coach Simone Inzaghi called him one of the greats, thanked him for his efforts and said he was honoured to coach him.

The timing comes a day after Al Hilal completed the £51 million, $69m, signing of England forward Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa. With Watkins arriving in his prime, the club appear to be shifting towards a longer-term approach.
