Lennart Karl scores and scores, but his celebration raises questions. The 17-year-old reacts evasively to questions and leaves the meaning open. His teammates are also clueless.
In the 2:2 draw against Mainz, Karl repeated the gesture that had already caused puzzlement after his goal against Sporting Lisbon. First he let the fingers of his hands, which were turned towards him, hit each other, possibly rubbing them. Then he put his right index finger to his lips – a silent gesture that leaves many interpretations open. In the mixed zone, Karl did not want to give an explanation. When asked about the meaning, he simply said it was „something quite normal“.
On the pitch, Karl scores goals, but off it he’s a talking point – even among his team-mates. Joshua Kimmich was clueless after the game: „I don’t even know,“ said the veteran and then joked: „Maybe because of a new contract.“ Karl’s current contract runs until 2028 and is automatically extended by a further year on his 18th birthday. A salary adjustment is also on the cards.

Max Eberl also reacted with a wink. The sporting director explained: „I’ve never scored a goal, so I don’t know how you think about it when you score one.“ And added with a grin: „I’ve just never needed it.“
Spox also speculated whether Karl’s jubilation could be a reaction to Mario Basler. The former Bayern professional recently said critically: „I think he’s being made bigger than he is. He’s a young player, a good player, but despite everything I don’t think he’ll make it in Munich.“ Basler is probably the Munich star’s biggest critic.
What exactly Karl is trying to say with his gesture remains his secret for the time being. In any case, he has once again secured him attention. In Munich, they are probably hoping that the 17-year-old’s jubilation will keep fans and the media speculating.
