Roy Keane has warned Manchester United chiefs that Lewis Hall is not the solution to their defensive woes next summer.

INEOS chiefs had made the Newcastle United starlet their first-choice left-back to bring in this summer, but nothing materialised beyond them establishing their interest.

Not only is Hall valued in the region of £60 million by the Magpies, but Newcastle also made it clear since the very beginning of the transfer window that he was off-limits, and, despite having the best part of the summer to seek out an alternative target, United failed to bolster the left-hand side of defence.

It leaves Michael Carrick relying on Luke Shaw as the only out-and-out senior left-back in the squad until at least January.

However, INEOS did perform a U-turn on youngster Harry Amass’ future; having initially put him up for sale, they eventually opted to keep hold of him, and he took part in first-team training yesterday.

Reports in recent days have suggested United will revive their pursuit of Hall in 2027 when the funds are available to make him a marquee addition.

By that point, he’ll only be 22, and will have another season of Premier League experience under his belt.

Yet, Keane has his doubts over whether the Chelsea graduate is the right fit at Old Trafford.

Weighing in on the speculation on his week’s Stick to Football episode, he said: “I don’t think Hall is the answer. He’s not bad, don’t get me wrong. I don’t think he’s a good defender.

“Of course, you want him to be comfortable in possession, but first and foremost, they can defend, because that’s what your challenge is now.

“Whatever it is with your attacking players, listen lads: two midfielders and an attacking four. Go and win us the game. But we’ve got to be solid defensively, even if it’s sacrificing being good on the ball.”
