Udinese forward Keinan Davis has accused Cagliari defender Alberto Dossena of racist abuse during Saturday’s Serie A match, which Udinese won 2-0.

Late in the game a melee broke out after Davis complained that Dossena had used racist insults. The pair clashed before numerous players joined in. Udinese said in a statement that it fully supports Davis, condemns such behaviour and trusts sporting justice to clarify the matter quickly.

Cagliari later issued a statement expressing surprise and deep disappointment at Udinese’s communique. It reaffirmed that the club’s values leave no room for discrimination or violence, and stated the on-field incident had been addressed after the match with no objective evidence or confirmation found.

On Instagram, Davis alleged he had been called a monkey and said he hoped Serie A would act. Dossena denied the allegation, saying it was hurtful and that such words were far from his culture and upbringing.

The referee’s report and that of Serie A officials have not yet been published.
