Celtic fans’ criticism of John Kennedy is “completely unfair” as the current state of the club is not his fault.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Celtic’s 4-1 defeat to Rangers on Sunday.

Celtic are on a three-match winless run and have won just three times in their last nine games across all competitions.

The mood towards the interim manager is almost universally negative, among both the fans and the commentariat.

Football Insider pundit and ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie is among those to have recently voiced his dissatisfaction with the 37-year-old’s methods.

But Kenny insists that Kennedy is not to blame for the club’s current predicament and urges Celtic fans to “point the finger” elsewhere.

“They should direct their anger somewhere else,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“He’s still working with the same players. Nothing has changed with regards to his playing squad. You can’t point the finger at him, I think that’s a bit daft.

“At the end of the day, he’s the interim manager. He’s going to be there until the end of the season. After that, there’s a good chance he’s going to leave.

“You’ve just got to try and support him. It’s the players that have let the club down. It’s them who are on the pitch week in, week out.

“So to have the anger at Kennedy is completely unfair, for me.”

Kennedy was appointed interim boss after Neil Lennon resigned in February.

He worked as Lennon’s number two throughout the Northern Irishman’s second spell at Parkhead.
