Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool great and 1983 Ballon d'Or runner-up, revealed on Tuesday that he is undergoing cancer treatment.
The player said in a post that he is currently receiving treatment and had wanted the news to remain private, but a technology slip meant he addressed it publicly. He asked for privacy for him and his family.
He acknowledged he had inadvertently shared a post confirming the diagnosis, and he thanked medical staff for their care and discretion.
Dalglish, 75, made 515 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 172 goals and helping the club win six Premier League titles and three European Cups.
He also managed Liverpool in two spells, overseeing 381 matches and winning three league titles.
Before Liverpool he spent nine seasons at Celtic, the two clubs being the only sides he represented. For Scotland he holds the national record of 102 caps and is joint top scorer with Denis Law on 30 goals.
