Kerem Demirbay (29) is expected to leave Bayer Leverkusen in the summer after four seasons at the Bundesliga club, according to a report from Kicker, despite one-year remaining on his current deal.
With the expected arrival of Granit Xhaka from Arsenal for a reported €15m, Demirbay is expected to play no further role at Bayer Leverkusen. The 29-year-old also came close to joining Hertha Berlin on loan in January, but B04 vetoed the transfer as it left them short in midfield. With the arrival of Xhaka in the six role, the Switzerland international is expected to take Demirbay’s place in Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Per the report, Demirbay earns a reported €5m a year without bonuses and with a significant wage, he may find it difficult to find a new club with his demands, which means Bayer may have to pay a small part of any transfer fee to the former Germany international as a severance payment.
Demirbay joined from Hoffenheim in 2019 for €32m and has scored 15 and created 30 in 149 games across all competitions, not the numbers that Bayer Leverkusen were hoping for.
